Waazh Program

The Waazh program is not currently being offered.

The Waazh is an Ojibwe language immersion program for children ages 3-5, which began with a feast on September 17th, 2019. The vision of the Waazh is that a den is a place to incubate new speakers of the language. The program can accommodate for a maximum of 12 Waazhishag (children that attend the Waazh program). The WAAZH is currently a classroom of the Fond du Lac Head Start under the leadership of the Fond du Lac Language Program. Currently, the program is being funded by the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, and the FDL Head Start. The program is staffed by two Language and Curriculum Specialists as well as a first language speaker. Current hours of operation are Monday – Thursday from 7:30AM – 3:30PM. If you have a child ages 3-5 and are interested in participating in the Waazh, please contact Charles Smith (FDL Language Coordinator) email: CharlesSmith@fdlrez.com

Boozhoo Waazh families,

The Waazhishaag are really starting to become skilled. It's already been two months that they have been learning. Every day they are starting to speak Anishinaabemowin more and more. This month we are working on counting things. They should be able to count to at least ten by now and higher with assistance. Please ask your Waazhish to count things out loud for you. They are also starting to realize what the months are called. Next week we will begin learning about why Namebini Giizis (February -The Sucker Fish Moon) is called so. Here are a few phrases we are working on:

  • Gwaashkwanin - Jump!
  • Giiwitaabatoo - Run around the outside of it!
  • Daanginan gizidan - Touch your feet!
  • Nabane-gaade-gaabawin - Stand on one foot!
  • Eko-midaaching - Ten times / Until ten
If you would like to know more, please e-mail us at waazh@fdlrez.com
