Title: Language and Curriculum Specialist, Full Time

General Summary:

The Language & Curriculum Specialist will develop and produce Ojibwe Language Curriculum designed to enhance a Master/Apprentice teaching program, produce staff training materials, and process related special project requests, under the supervision of the Anishinaabemowin Coordinator, and as needed for all FDL Entities and community events.

Position Responsibilies:

  • Works with Master/Apprentice Programs, translators and translations, internal and community signage, and language/cultural staff training.
  • Creates written records and visual manipulative learning tools as curriculum. All materials created become the property of Fond du Lac Reservation and will be included in the Anishinaabemowin Resource Library.
  • Assists in production of audio/visual staff training DVDs and audio CDs, producing voicemail greetings for each department’s use.
  • Delivers in-service language instruction as requested and scheduled for various departments.
  • Recommends language resource library acquisitions to the Anishinaabemowin Coordinator.
  • Serves as substitute teacher for language tables and speaker at other gatherings as needed.
  • Assists various Anishinaabemowin students, community members and groups in researching library holdings in the reference library catalog base.
  • Classifies and maintains an up-to-date catalog of library holdings and materials.
  • Serves as the Language Resource library’s database manager.
  • Acts as director of Language Resource Library services in Anishinaabemowin Coordinator’s absence.
  • Contributes to acquisition and collection development efforts and recommends to Anishinaabemowin Coordinator potential Language resource acquisitions as necessary.
  • Maintains statistics on collection inventory, reference book use, technical services activity, and database usage. Provides periodic reports as requested.
  • Participates in committee assignments and reservation-wide initiatives.
  • Attends on professional meetings, workshops, and continuing education opportunities as requested by the Anishinaabemowin Coordinator.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees, band members and/or clients.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal physical requirements.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including work in adverse weather conditions.

Position Qualifications:

  • Two years experience in oral Ojibwe language is required. Written Ojibwe language experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Master Speaker level in Ojibwe, or advanced level second language learner status is preferred.
  • Relevant coursework in Anishinaabemowin or eminence credentials is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a community service environment with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse population is preferred.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work; self-direction; and ability to make sound decisions in an environment with limited resources and personnel is preferred.
  • Experience with Fiero orthography system is preferred.
  • Ability to work in an Ojibwe language teaching environment.
  • Knowledge of new and emerging technologies related to digital media production of Ojibwe language materials.
  • Operations consist of shift work; seven days a week and on holidays.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Travel is required.
