Community Interviewer, Full Time Seasonal Temp

General Summary:

The Community Interviewer is responsible for interviewing Tribal Elders and other community members to identify and document the presence of historic properties of spiritual and cultural significance. Extensive travel is required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Carries out interviews with Tribal Elders and other knowledgeable community members selected for interview within each participating Tribal community.
  • Takes meticulous, accurate, and legible notes during the interview.
  • Works closely and coordinates interviews with the Community Assistant in each Tribal community.
  • Works closely with the Audio/Video Equipment Technician.
  • Respects, understands and observes cultural protocols related to obtaining traditional knowledge within each Tribal community.
  • Conducts interviews in a timely and efficient manner.
  • References hard copy maps and other documentation during interviews.
  • Assists the Transcriber with transcribing interviews and reviews data obtained from interviews for completeness and accuracy.
  • Generates status reports as project requires.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged sitting is required.

Position Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting respectful interviews is required.
  • Ability to communicate cross-culturally and knowledge of cross cultural protocols is required.
  • In-person interviewing skills and ability to establish rapport and elicit a complete and accurate account from the interviewee is required.
  • Must be enthusiastic, respectful, responsive and professional with others displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Previous experience working in Tribal Cultural Resource Management and understanding of Traditional Ecological Knowledge is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
