K-12 School Wide Music Teacher, Part Time

General Summary:

Ojibwe culture is essential to learning in our community. Culturally responsive teaching is a pedagogy that we use to recognize the guidance that our Ojibwe culture gives us throughout every aspect over our lives. This position teaches general music classes to students ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade ensuring that the Minnesota State standards are met and includes blending a cultural teaching style.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teaches courses in music to K-12 students as specified in Minnesota State and Ojibwe cultural standards.
  • Instructs pupils in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district and Minnesota graduation standards.
  • Music courses do require research and written work to provide evidence of student mastery. This position will be responsible for marking students’ work and providing them with the necessary feedback, criticism, encouragement and support.
  • Adapts music material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides appropriate to the interests and maturity levels of students; maintains required inventory records.
  • Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
  • Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time.
  • Encourages students to think independently and express original ideas.
  • Evaluates each student’s progress in music knowledge and skills.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive studio environment.
  • Communicates in appropriate manner with parents and school counselor on student progress.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Maintains accurate daily records of student’s attendance and periodic grading.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Teach the curriculum provided for the classroom assignment.
  • Develop an appropriate plan of operation for the classroom.
  • Manage the classroom in a manner that assures instruction and learning.
  • Work with the staff in developing new programs for use in the classroom and the school.
  • Perform tasks that are inherent to that of a teacher.
  • Provides a variety of instructional methods to assure that all students receive instruction that is compatible to learning styles.
  • Provides feedback to the principal when necessary so that normal operation is assured.
  • Develop culturally appropriate curriculum.
  • Prepare students for the performance assessments appropriate for each grade level.
  • Provide weekly lesson plans to the Building Principal that incorporates the Minnesota State Standards.
  • Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult child interactions.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all staff and community members.
  • Maintains professional standards toward creating confidential relationships with all program participants and staff.
  • Establish and maintain an attractive, safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment for the children.
  • Routine classroom cleaning/maintenance to ensure a safe, clean and secure learning environment for all students.
  • Music teachers may direct a school band or choir, organize performances and maintain classroom instruments.
  • This position may take part in events and projects outside of the classroom, such as taking pupils on musical trips.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal physical requirements.

Position Qualifications:

  • Current State of Minnesota Music license is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Some travel is required.
