Ojibwemowin Teacher, Full Time

General Summary:

Create and teach Ojibwemowin curriculum for the classroom assignment. Develop an appropriate plan of operation for the classroom. Manage the classroom in a manner that assures instruction and learning. Work with the staff in developing new programs for use in the classroom and the school. Perform tasks that are inherent to that of a teacher. Provides a variety of instructional methods to assure that all students receive instruction that is compatible to learning styles. Provides feedback to the principal when necessary so that normal operations are assured. Develop culturally appropriate curriculum. Prepare students for the performance assessments appropriate for each grade level. Provide weekly lesson plans to the Building Principal that incorporates the Minnesota State Standards. Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult child interactions. Maintain a professional relationship with all staff and community members. Maintains professional standards toward creating confidential relationships with all program participants and staff. Establish and maintain an attractive, safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment for the children.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Instructs students in the Ojibwemowin, history and culture.
  • Assist in the development of oral Ojibwemowin tapes, videocassettes, lesson plan, and language masters.
  • Attend in-services or workshops pertaining to bilingual and bi-cultural education as well as educational workshops or schooling.
  • Able to translate/interpret written and oral Ojibwemowin to English and translate/interpret written and oral English to Ojibwemowin.
  • Attend staff meetings and take an active part in the overall operation of the school.
  • Develop curriculum for language enrichment program.
  • Develop curriculum materials for integration into other subject areas, integrating Ojibwemowin into all classroom lesson plans where possible.
  • Maintain accurate daily records of student’s attendance and periodic grading.
  • Use multi-sensory techniques to teach to all learners.
  • Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult child interaction.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all staff and community members.
  • Maintains professional standards towards creating confidential relationships with all program participants and staff.
  • Participates in all education programs including local and regional in-service training, advisory committee, and community education meetings as directed.
  • Routine classroom cleaning/maintenance to ensure a safe, clean and secure learning environment for all students.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed.
  • Read and stay abreast of current topics in education.
  • Utilize various resources.
  • Work with program coordinators to ensure initiatives are being met.
  • Tutor students on an individual basis.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare and distribute required reports.
  • Observe and evaluate student’s performance.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees, band members and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal physical requirements.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minnesota teaching licensure or eminence credentials is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Ojibwe and English is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Smartboard and NASIS is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
